Dr. William Koontz is a Tennessee native who graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine.  He did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.  After four years of small town general OB/GYN practice in North Carolina, he did a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (high risk obstetrics) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine

He has served as a full-time faculty member at the University of Louisville and at Mercer University in Georgia.  While at U of L, he was the first in Louisville to perform ultrasound-guided umbilical vein blood sampling, as well as the first to place a shunt in a baby in the uterus to relieve urinary tract obstruction.  He has consulted on complicated pregnancies, performed high-level ultrasounds, and performed fetal procedures for well over 20 years.

Dr. Koontz lives in Louisville with his wife Bonnie, a graphic designer.  They have two grown children, Carl and Rachel.  When not in the office, Dr. Koontz enjoys scuba diving, photography and golf.
