How to feel for changes: First lie down and using the flat surface of the three middle fingers, examine each breast using a grid pattern from the collarbone to the bra line and from the armpit to the breastbone. Use superficial, then deep pressure. With same technique, in the shower, lather each breast, with one arm raised, examine with the opposite hand. What to feel for: How to look for changes: Changes in size or shape of breasts or the position of your nipples Inward puckering of the skin or nipple Sores or scaling on the nipple areola Redness of skin Enlargement of skin pores Do the exam on the day your menstrual period ends Have your self-examination techniques checked by your doctor or other health care professional Breastfeeding has been shown time and time again to be a superior form of nutrition for infants as well as having multiple benefits to the mother.
