Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is a viral infection that can be transmitted sexually through oral, anal or vaginal sex. Additionally, it can be transmitted from mother to baby. Approximately 1 in 5 Americans have been infected with herpes. Many people have been infected with the virus, but never experienced symptoms. The symptoms usually include painful blisters in the genital area as well as burning with urination. Evaluation can be done in the office to detect current infection or prior exposure. Herpes is a lifelong condition, but treatment is available for the infection and to prevent recurrent outbreaks. It is important to remember that herpes can be transmitted when lesions are not visible. Medication can decrease the liklihood of transmitting the virus to your partner. Condoms decrease the liklihood of obtaining herpes as well as other sexually transmitted diseases.
